"This photo was taken on New Year's Eve 2010 while on a three night snowshoe trip in Northern Saskatchewan.  Seven of us pulled our gear on sleds across MacKay Lake on a very cold, windy day.  The rest of the weekend was clear, cold and calm with temperatures dipping down to -32 C(-25 F) at night.

The burning vertical log in the center of the photo is a jack pine candle that was given to us by some dog sledders in the area. It provided some much needed warmth and light on this cold New Year's Eve.

The boreal forest is amazing any time of year but in the winter it becomes a wonderland!"

Caprock Quickie

At times it may have more mud than snow, but if winter camping in the South Prong Loop of Caprock Canyon State Park looks this good, then we’re all in.
